More and more schools want their school trips to be not only fun, but meaningful and educational. With City Detective, Qugato’s educational city game, students explore the city in an interactive way: they work together, solve puzzles and uncover a mystery in the heart of town.

Qugato is an official partner of CJP (the Dutch Cultural Youth Pass), which means Dutch schools can book our city games entirely using their Cultuurkaart budget. Ideal for teachers looking for an affordable and educational school trip.

To help teachers get the most out of the experience, Qugato has developed a free Teacher’s Guide: a practical booklet full of lesson ideas, reflection questions and cross-curricular activities.

What Is the Qugato Teacher’s Guide?

The Qugato Teacher’s Guide has been created especially for schools that want to use City Detective as part of their teaching. The guide shows how the game can be integrated into a lesson, project week or school trip.

In the Teacher’s Guide, you’ll find:

  • Lesson ideas for various subjects, including Citizenship, History, Arts & Culture and Geography.
  • Reflection questions about teamwork, communication and critical thinking.
  • Practical activities and tips for preparing or debriefing the game in class.
  • An overview of locations and historical facts from the game, including references.

Lesson Ideas for Citizenship and Collaboration

The Qugato Teacher’s Guide makes it easy to link City Detective to curriculum goals and citizenship education. The game fits seamlessly with themes such as teamwork, communication, language skills and heritage education.

During the game, students practise skills that appear in almost every subject:

  • Working effectively in teams and making use of each other’s strengths.
  • Reasoning and communicating to solve puzzles.
  • Observing and thinking critically about what they encounter in the city.

This turns a school trip into an active learning experience outdoors. Teachers can also use the guide to deepen lessons or strengthen their citizenship curriculum.

Why a City Game Makes a School Trip Truly Valuable

City Detective, Qugato’s educational city game, transforms a school trip into a meaningful learning experience. Instead of passively following a museum tour or guided walk, students take charge: they investigate, reason, communicate and discover the city step by step. It’s a powerful example of experiential learning.

Educational value

For teachers, the educational value is significant: the activity directly supports curriculum goals such as citizenship, language development and heritage education, without requiring extra lesson preparation. With the free Teacher’s Guide, teachers receive ready-to-use reflection questions and activities that link the game to classroom learning.

Active outdoor learning

It’s also an outdoor activity: students are physically active, walking through the city, working together in teams and staying engaged. At a time when young people spend a lot of time indoors, this is a refreshing change.

The combination of movement, collaboration and enquiry-based learning helps knowledge stick, and ensures students and teachers experience the activity more positively.

Reflection enhances learning

The free Teacher’s Guide includes structured reflection questions and activities that help integrate the experience into classroom learning. This aligns with the findings of OnderwijsKennis (the Dutch Education Knowledge Centre), which emphasises that outdoor learning is most effective when it is embedded in teaching with clear preparation and reflection.

An Affordable and Easy-to-Organise School Trip

An educational school trip needs to be both meaningful and easy for teachers to organise. That’s why Qugato’s city game is designed to require minimal logistics from schools.

Booking a game takes only a few minutes, and thanks to our partnership with CJP, the activity can be fully funded through the Cultuurkaart budget.

If needed, we can also arrange the coach transport to and from the city. We collaborate with reliable coach companies throughout the Netherlands, so teachers don’t have to request separate quotes or contact transport providers themselves.

This makes City Detective a worry-free and budget-friendly choice for project weeks, cultural days and school trips in secondary schools and vocational education.
