Wereldmuseum Rotterdam: culture, identity, and global citizenship
The Wereldmuseum Rotterdam is one of the most distinctive museums in the Netherlands. Its collections and exhibitions focus on global cultures, colonial history, identity, spirituality and international connections, making it highly relevant for subjects such as:
- History (colonialism, trade, world history).
- Citizenship & Social Studies (identity, representation, global citizenship).
- Art & Culture (creative expression from a global perspective).
- Religious Studies (spirituality and world religions).
- Geography (culture, migration, globalisation).
The museum offers a wide range of educational programmes tailored to secondary education, including themes such as colonial history, identity and perception. Students actively engage through discussion, interaction and creative tasks.
Located along the iconic Willemskade, the museum is easily accessible by public transport from across South Holland and beyond.

Why City Detective works perfectly for school trips
- Active learning outdoors: students are moving, not sitting still
- Team-based collaboration: teams of 2 to 6 students
- No guide required: remote support via WhatsApp and phone
- Flexible start times: no fixed schedule
- Privacy-friendly: login via unique codes, no personal data needed
- Duration: approx. 1.5 hours, with pause options
For larger groups, classes can be split: one group visits the museum while the other plays the game, then they switch.
City Detective: an interactive outdoor experience in Rotterdam
Before or after the museum visit, students step into the role of detectives and explore the city.
City Detective is an interactive city game where students work in small teams to solve challenges at real locations. They collect clues, unravel a fictional mystery and discover Rotterdam’s history and culture along the way.
A tailored route starting at the museum
For schools combining both activities, we’ve created a customised route that starts directly outside the Wereldmuseum.
This ensures a natural transition between the museum visit and the city game, making the day feel like one cohesive experience.

More than just a day out: real educational value
What makes this combination powerful is the strong thematic connection.
Topics explored inside the museum, such as cultural diversity, identity and global history, are reflected in Rotterdam itself.
The city becomes a living classroom. Students don’t just learn about these themes, they experience them.
